SDF and Global Coalition target ISIS cells in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in cooperation with the Global Coalition, launched a military and security operation targeting the cells of the Islamic State (ISIS) in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor at dawn on Friday.

A North Press correspondent said that the operation targeted tunnels and trafficking routes that were used by ISIS cells in Deir ez-Zor to hide and smuggle its members and weapons through Wadi al-Ajij crossing on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

He added that Wadi al-Ajij is an important passage for terrorist cells to smuggle weapons and equipment used in their operations against the SDF, the Global Coalition and tribal figures in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Local sources told North Press that Global Coalition aircraft flew at low altitude while covering the security operation in Wadi al-Ajij.

SDF launched the Deterrence of Terrorism operation at the beginning of June in two phases to pursue ISIS cells in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah. The operation resulted in the arrest of dozens of sleeper agents and a number of leaders of ISIS.
