Civilian casualties in bombardment on Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – Two civilians were killed and others wounded as a result of a bombardment carried out by Syrian government forces on the de-escalation zone in northwestern Syria on Monday.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on Monday that Syrian government forces (SAA) carried out a missile attack on the western region of Syria’s northern city of Idlib.
Turkish-backed Syrian opposition media announced that neighborhoods of Ariha and villages of Zawiya Mountain were heavily bombarded by the SAA.
UK-based SOHR has documented the death of two civilians, including an IDP, the wounding of nine other civilians due to the bombardment on the city of Ariha.
The Baladi website reported that more than 60 mortars fell on the villages of Kafar Ouida, Sufohn, al-Fateirah, Fulayful, and Bara, which are located south of Idlib.
Meanwhile, Turkish-backed armed opposition groups targeted SAA positions in the cities of Kifrenbul and Maarat al-Numan in the southern countryside of Idlib, with no casualties reported.
The region has been under siege by the SAA since mid-July, following the targeting of a joint Russian-Turkish patrol in western Ariha which left Russian soldiers wounded.
The latest violence is in progress in the de-escalation zone, although a ceasefire was signed between Russia and Turkey in March.
Syrian president Bashar Assad, in a speech in front of Syrian Parliament, hinted earlier that the government forces should control the remaining Syrian lands.
