US Department of Justice convicts ISIS member detained by SDF

The US Department of Justice announced in a statement on Wednesday that an American ISIS member admitted to committing acts of terrorism after spending five years with the Islamic State in Syria.

The Global Coalition said that the Syrian Democratic Forces arrested him in March 2019 and deported him to the US in cooperation with the FBI.

U.S Justice ministry said in its statement that 23-year-old Omer Kuzu admitted to leaving Texas with his brother Youssef and travelling to Turkey in 2014 before going to Mosul, Iraq and Syria.

Kuzu pleaded guilty to terrorism charges on Wednesday and was sentenced to up to 20 years in federal prison, with his sentence beginning in January 2021.

The Global Coalition stated on Wednesday that an American ISIS member was arrested by the Syrian Democratic Forces and had admitted to his affiliation with ISIS.

Global Coalition spokesman Colonel Myles Caggins tweeted that Kuzu had been captured in the village of Dashisha, at the time a crossing point between Syria and Iraq for the Islamic state, in 2019.

The Global Coalition, in cooperation with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), continue to engage in operations against ISIS and provide logistical, military and air support to the SDF to eliminate ISIS members and achieve stability in the region, according to the Coalition.
