We hope for better relationship with Russia: Syrian Democratic Council
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The co-chair of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Amina Omar, expressed her hope that the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the People’s Will Party would contribute to developing a relationship with the Russia “in a better and positive way.”
In an exclusive statement to North Press, Omar said the “strong” presence of Russia as an international power on Syrian territory and on North and East Syria is influential and has a relationship with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).
Omar added that the signing of the memorandum of understanding is important in pushing toward a political solution for the Syrian crisis, and emphasizes the need for dialogue among Syrian parties.
She pointed out that the memorandum supports the participation of the SDC in all conferences related to resolving the country’s crisis, foremost of which are the Geneva conference and the works of the Constitutional Committee.
Hikmat Habib, SDC deputy co-president of the Executive Board and member of the visiting delegation to Moscow, said that the People’s Will Party chairs the Moscow Platform, which is recognized by an international decision along with other opposition platforms.
He noted that Russia gave its blessing to the agreement between the two parties and considered it “an advanced step for Syrians.”
Habib, who was with the joint delegation to meet with the Russian Foreign Ministry in Moscow, said that they discussed with the Russian Foreign Ministry Turkey’s obstruction of the political process and its veto of their participation in the political process in Syria, whether in Geneva or in the committee for drafting the Syrian constitution.
He stressed that the Russian Foreign Ministry promised they would communicate with the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen for real and official participation of the SDC in the political process.
Last Monday, both the SDC and the People’s Will Party signed a memorandum of understanding with articles related to the political roadmap to solve the Syrian crisis in accordance with the UN Resolution 2254 and the drafting of the Syrian constitution.
