Semalka crossing between Syria and Iraq closed to Iraqi residents

DERIK, Syria (North Press) – Semalka border crossing in Syria’s Derik, which links the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (KRG) with the Autonomous Administration regions of North and East Syria, closed the crossing to those with Iraqi residencies until further notice.

Sherzad Osman, the administrator in the crossing’s affairs office, told North Press that they decided in cooperation with Faysh Khabur crossing in the KRG not to allow of bearers of Iraqi residencies to pass to the region.

He added that Sunday, September 6 will be the last day to pass through the crossing, adding that those with Iraqi residency who are scheduled to travel on September 7 must come to the crossing on Sunday, September 6.

On July 5, the Autonomous Administration banned movement through the crossing, except for those who bear European and Iraqi residencies, provided they had a flight ticket and obtained approval from KRG.

The crossing has witnessed several bans on movement since March as a precautionary measure in combating the coronavirus outbreak.
