Turkish offensive on northern Syria continues despite ceasefire

TAL TAMR, Syria (North Press) – The town of Tal Tamr, 40 km north of the city of Hasakah, Syria, is subjected to continued offensives by the Turkish military and Turkish-backed Syrian opposition armed groups for the past three months.

“The shelling targeted populated villages and vital facilities,” locals said.

Despite a US-Turkish and a Russian-Turkish agreement for a ceasefire in the area, the Turkish violations are continue, whether by repeated bombing or continued flight of Turkish drones, according to Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) sources.

“In June, Turkey violated the ceasefire more than 30 times, as it bombed villages and towns on the frontlines and caused the displacement of the locals,” an SDF source told North Press.

“The bombing caused large spaces of agricultural lands to be burned,” the source added.

A source from the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) said that the Turkish bombing burned more than Assyrian Christian 100 houses. 

In July, thr Turkish military and the its backed opposition groups targeted points of the Asayish as well as those of government forces.

The indiscriminate bombing led the electric lines that provide Tal Tamr and its surroundings with electricity to go out of service, said the co-chair of the electricity management in Tal Tamr.

On October 17, 2019, a meeting fot a ceasefire agreement was held between the US and Turkey, announced by the Vice President Mike Pence from Ankara.

On October 22, 2019 a similar agreement betwrrn Russia and Turkey was announced by Russian president Vladimir Putin from Sochi.
