Former US Envoy to anti-ISIS coalition calls for justice for Yezidis massacred by ISIS in Iraq

(North Press) – Former US Envoy to the Global Coalition to Counter ISIS Brett McGurk called for justice for Yezidis and accountability for those responsible for atrocities in the Yezidi homeland Sinjar (Shengal) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on his Twitter account on Monday. McGurk tweeted his call on the sixth anniversary of the ISIS attack on the area, during which they abducted and killed thousands of Yezidis, a Kurdish-speaking religious minority that has often been subjected to massacres throughout history for their religious beliefs. 

McGurk tweeted that six years ago, ISIS began "massacring men and kidnapping women and children, 1000s of whom are still missing."

McGurk called for justice for Yezidis by holding those involved in the Shengal massacres accountable, writing that "justice will not be done until they are found and ALL involved in this atrocity are held to account."

During their attacks on Shengal ISIS kidnapped more than six thousand Yezidis, and the fate of more than half of this number is still unknown, according to United Nations statistics. Moreover, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) freed hundreds of Yezidis in the military campaign against ISIS in North and East Syria.
