Opening the cultural center in Raqqa city

last Monday, the first cultural center was opened at south of Al-Sa’sa square in Raqqa city, after the expulsion of the Islamic State Organization on October 17th, 2017.


The central cultural center was destroyed during the war between the Syrian Democratic Forces and the Organization’s militants, as the center was stroke by the International coalition aircrafts, while the organization prevented all artistic and cultural manifestations in the city.


Opening the Center came as a part of the Civil Council’s plan, that aimed at restore life to the city, of which is destroyed.


The opening ceremony was attended by leaders of the Self-Administration and the Civil Council, as well as some artists from Raqqa and its people. The co-chairman of the Committee of Culture and Antiquities said, “the center is considered a real cultural monument, since it comes after years of injustice and ignorance in the shade of the Islamic State Organization control.”

Furthermore, he stressed that it will have an important impact in the development of cultural and intellectual reality and guarantee the continuity of cultural diversity in the city.


The Center will include a diversity of cultures in its activities, referring to the presence of Kurds and Arabs altogether in the same center.


The center consists of a public library which includes thousands of books, a theater, a plastic art offices, a folklore art group, a music office, and an office for people with special needs, for teaching culture and arts.


“Raqqa was the capital of culture and had more than/ 21/ cultural centers in the city and its countryside, all of which were destroyed in the last war and by the Islamic State organization,” said Ziad al-Hamad, the center’s co-chair to North Press. 


Additionally, he said that they have opened the center to revive the cultural arts.


It is worth mentioning that Raqqa is famous for its varied cultural and artistic richness and is (Furati) overtones. Moreover, Abdulsalam Al-Igeli is one of the most prominent figure in Raqqa.
