On a visit to New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly and Washington DC, the co-chair of the Executive Board of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Elham Ahmed, held meetings with the U.S. administration officials focused on the formation of the Syrian Constitutional Commission and borders security.
In an interview with North-Press, Ms Elham Ahmed described the exclusion of the components of northeast Syria from the process of writing a Syrian constitution as “an evidence of no real intention to achieve a firm solution for Syria”.
“It isn’t possible to find solutions with the isolation of the most important party on the Syrian territories, which controls one-third of the country, and manages the affairs of 5 million Syrian citizens, provides them with services, with 70,000 fighters and a unified leadership that differs from the situation of political fragmentation in which other Syrian regions are suffering from”, she added.
Concerning the silent U.S. stance on the exclusion of SDC from the process of writing the constitution, Elham Ahmed said that one of the dilemmas faced by the SDF is that its close military relationship with the U.S. is angering and provoking Turkey, especially after all countries started talking about SDF’s organized experiment and fulfillments.
Challenges after ISIS defeat in light of the political exclusion of SDF
One of the challenges which Washington still sees as an obstacle for the international community after the defeat of ISIS is the thousands of ISIS fighters and their families in SDF-controlled areas.
In this regard, Ms Ahmed said: “al-Hawl camp, which contains tens of thousands of people, is one of the issues which proves that there is no serious solution which doesn’t include us. In addition to that, we control an area of more than 5 million citizens, more than 4,000 schools, and more than 800,000 students in seven regions, while our exclusion from the political solution is exactly the same as what the ostrich does when it is in danger, where it put its head in the sand believing that the danger has gone away”.
the co-chair of the Executive Board of the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), Elham Ahmed concluded her interview with North-Press by saying: “The U.S. listens to all sides in Syria, including our own experiment”, stressing that,” SDC has a lot of friends in the U.S., reminding the successful experiment which has turned from a small group of fighters who were protecting a few villages, to a huge political coalition with military forces which achieved remarkable successes, and thus, going on with the diplomatic work abroad and the political struggle at home will meet the demands of the people of the region”.
