Dispute over Syrian north affects Turkish-American relationship, American Researcher

The statement by the US State Department , spoiled  “The populist speech and the threat campaigns led by the Turkish government, through threatening to launch an operation in the Syrian north”. Robert Paladino, deputy spokesman for the US State Department, stressed  that any “unilateral actions” by any party in north Syria, specially that the presence of Americans nearby, would cause “great concern” for the American side.

“We are communicating with our NATO ally ( referring to Turkey) and our main partner in the alliance against Da’ash (referring to the  Syrian Democratic Forces) to underscore the need to stop any escalation in the positions,” Paladino said in a news conference.

“People in north Syria face existential challenges upon the US announcement of the withdrawal of 2,000 troops, yet, their partnership with the United States has not only enhanced the victory over  Da’esh, but also, enabled the consisting groups of the Syrian Democratic Forces to control the most stable part of Syria, which was hit by a bloody civil war, as well as the extension of control over an important part of agricultural and energy resources”. The Newsweek magazine reported Friday. 

“The dispute over Syrian north casts a shadow over all aspects of the Turkish-American relationship, and it is obvious  through the escalation by the both sides over the Turkey’s purchase of the Russian defense system S400, where Turkey believes that the United States and the West countries did not consider Turkey a reliable ally in Syria. Further,  Turkey blames Obama administration, for not granting it Patriot missiles deal to be deployed on its border with Syria ” the matter that Ankara considered a justification for purchasing the Russian system defense, which is a red line for America and it is irreversible if happened”. Matthias Brodsky, a US researcher at the Center for Security Studies, and Middle East Affairs specialist, said in an exclusive talk to North  Press Agency.

Moreover, Brodsky asserts that the US position in Syria is evident in the Administration’s insistence on not giving up the matters taken for granted, ” In the last meeting, the US secretary of State, Pompeo, warned his Turkish counterpart, directly, of any irresponsible move in the north of Syria”.   As Brodsky consider purchasing  the Russian defense system, “an attempt at rapprochement by Ankara with Moscow, that has great influence in Syria. 

“This will help draw a red line for any hostile forces trying to deploy any violent operations in the north and east of Syria. The current administration is withdrawing to achieve a political gain before the 2020 elections – the implementation of the promise to return US troops to their country, which, of course, it will not exchange  this gain by losing the vast areas that the coalition has won over  ” the terrorist organization of Da’esh” , because this would be a political failure for any US president. Brodsky said, regarding keeping 200 US troops in Syrian north.

The American researcher, specialized in Middle East affairs, said that the American side, whether the Administration or the Pentagon, is aware of the sensitive situation of the region andb the nature of the militias, on which Turkey relies, and its incapacity to fight the Islamic state organization, beside the impossibility of filling the gap, that fighting or disbanding the  Syrian Democratic Forces might leave ” for  the number of these forces exceeds the number of armies fighting in Syria, plus,  there is no openness in any of the American institutions, whether executive or legislative, to carry out what Turkey has been demanding since the first year of the war in Syria, and what it calls “safe zone “under its control, where  Washington consider it  an occupation of Syria’s land, and it was rejected by Obama and Trump’s administration, despite Turkey’s invoke the difficult humanitarian conditions for the Syrians at that time.  And any oncoming administration will do the same. Based on the Pentagon’s conclusions”.  According to the American researcher.

Brodsky expects  that keeping 200 US troops is considered a symbolic introduction to a safe area for the people of north Syria, where the US rules the game and prevents US from losing its gains in Syria, whether by sanctioned Iran or Turkey and its militias.

” Politically, It will not be in the American administration’s favor, causing disorder in the region, from where most dangerous terrorist organizations ever were launched, which,also, carried out active terrorist operations in Western cities. Thus, the number of American forces in the north is unlikely to be reduced,  and may be reinforced by other troops sent by a number of European countries. ”  Brodsky concluded.
