Mazloum Abdi meets families of prisoners, missing persons in Kobani
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Adviser to the Syrian Presidency Mazloum Abdi on Tuesday met with families of prisoners and missing persons in the northern Syrian city of Kobani, listening to their demands and concerns over the fate of their relatives.
Abdi, former Commander in Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), discussed with the families the latest developments concerning the prisoners and missing persons file, as well as ways to follow up on the issue and address related cases.
The meeting comes as the prisoners and missing persons file remains one of the outstanding issues linked to the ongoing understandings between the Syrian transitional government and the SDF, amid demands from families in northeastern Syria for authorities to disclose the fate of missing persons and release detainees.
In March, families in Kobani and Qamishli called for the issue to be prioritized and addressed more quickly alongside the integration process between the two sides.
The meeting follows Abdi’s appointment as an adviser to the Syrian presidency in late August, after the announcement of the dissolution of the SDF and its integration into Syrian state institutions as part of the understandings between the two sides.
Abdi on Monday stressed during a meeting in Kobani the need for a transparent and independent investigation into the city’s recent prison fire and for those responsible to be held accountable. He also called for judicial and security institutions to be activated and for the integration of security, judicial and administrative bodies in the region to be accelerated.
