Minneapolis shooting leaves 3 dead, 5 wounded
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Three people, including the suspected shooter, were killed and five others wounded in a shooting at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on Wednesday, authorities said.
Two Minneapolis police officers were among those wounded by gunfire, while a third officer suffered injuries not caused by gunfire, police Sgt. Garrett Parten said at a news conference. All three officers were in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.
Police received a 911 call reporting gunfire shortly after 4:30 p.m. Officers arrived at the apartment building and entered it less than two minutes after being dispatched, Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson said.
Officers quickly found victims inside the building before hearing additional gunshots from a higher floor.
Peterson said officers moved toward the source of the gunfire and encountered a haze that significantly reduced visibility. He did not provide further details.
One officer was shot in the leg, while another was shot twice in the abdomen.
One victim died at the scene and another died after being taken to hospital. Authorities said it was not immediately clear how the suspected shooter died.
Police did not release the suspect’s identity but said authorities were familiar with the person before the shooting.
“I’m truly sickened by this level of violence,” Peterson said, praising officers who responded to what he described as an extraordinarily dangerous situation.
Residents said they heard multiple rounds of gunfire and fled the building. One resident, Julius Bailey, said he saw a man carrying a pistol and heard a woman screaming before running to safety.
Authorities urged people to avoid the densely populated Loring Park neighborhood near the Minneapolis Convention Center as police responded.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said state officials were assisting local law enforcement, while FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency would provide resources to support the investigation.
