Russian diplomat says Moscow-Damascus flights resume
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Russian Chargé d’Affaires in Damascus Zaur Guseinov said on Sunday that the resumption of direct flights between Moscow and Damascus would strengthen bilateral cooperation.
A Syrian Airlines flight from Moscow arrived at Damascus International Airport on Sunday, marking the resumption of regular direct air services between the two countries after a suspension of more than 18 months, according to SANA.
Speaking during a ceremony to receive the flight, Guseinov said Russia continues to support Syria’s prosperity, its people and unity, SANA reported.
He said the regular flights would facilitate exchanges of delegations, strengthen coordination and increase communication between business, scientific and cultural sectors.
Guseinov added that thousands of Syrian students currently studying at Russian universities would benefit from reduced travel costs and shorter travel times.
He said Russia seeks to build relations with Syria on the basis of friendship, partnership and mutual benefit, guided by the interests of the Syrian people.
The head of Syria’s General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport, Omar al-Hosari, said the resumption of the Moscow-Damascus route was part of a broader plan to reconnect Syria with international destinations.
He said Syrian Airlines would resume flights to additional regional and international destinations, including new European routes, which would be announced in the coming period.
The Moscow-Damascus route had been suspended for more than 18 months. Its resumption comes amid efforts by Syrian authorities to expand the country’s air links with regional and international destinations.
