Young Syrian dies after detention at Latakia police station
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) — Muhammad Husam al-Din Ghamira died on Sunday in the intensive care unit of Tishreen University Hospital in Latakia, days after being admitted in critical condition following his detention at a police station in al-Haffah, Latakia countryside.
Meanwhile, a security source told Syrian Revolution newspaper that seven people who were present in the holding cell when the incident involving Ghamira occurred have been detained.
Ghamira had been detained for three days over a financial complaint or claim against him. He suffered from hemophilia, a genetic disorder that affects blood clotting, and his family had informed police officers at the station of his condition beforehand.
Ghamira’s family accuses police officers of beating and torturing him while in detention, causing severe internal bleeding in his head and abdomen.
He was released by a judicial decision and immediately transferred to the intensive care unit in a coma, according to his family.
