500 displaced families to return to Serekaniye by end of week
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – 500 displaced families from Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) region in Hasakah Governorate, northeastern Syria, are set to return to their homes and farmland by the end of this week, Mahmoud Jamil, spokesperson for the Sere Kaniye Displaced Committee told North Press on Saturday.
Jamil said that the group includes 140 families from the city of Sere Kaniye and 360 families from villages located south and west of the city.
According to Jamil, the committee has received the lists of returnees from the presidential team tasked with implementing the Jan. 29 agreement between the SDF and Damascus, paving the way for the start of the return process.
In July, the committee submitted copies of the displaced families’ lists to the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Gen. Mazloum Abdi, presidential team member Mustafa Abdi, and Hasakah Governor Nour al-Din Ahmad as part of preparations for the return of residents to the city.
The planned return marks a significant step for hundreds of families who have remained displaced since late 2019, when Turkish forces and affiliated factions launched a military offensive in the Sere Kaniye region, forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee their homes.
Thousands of displaced people from Sere Kaniye have since been living in camps and host communities across northeastern Syria, particularly in Hasakah, while local authorities and community representatives have repeatedly called for guarantees to facilitate their safe and voluntary return.
The latest return initiative comes amid ongoing efforts by local officials and the committee representing displaced residents to implement agreements aimed at enabling families to return to their areas of origin after years of displacement.
