Investigation links Damascus bombing cell to ISIS
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Preliminary investigations into the cell responsible for the July 7 bombings in Damascus have found that its members were affiliated with ISIS, Ahmad al-Dalati, commander of the Internal Security in Rural Damascus, announced on Friday.
In a statement, al-Dalati said security forces reached one member of the cell during the investigation into the attacks. Surveillance and follow-up operations later enabled authorities to identify the whereabouts of the remaining suspects.
He said security forces subsequently carried out simultaneous raids in several areas of Damascus and its countryside, leading to the arrest of all members of the cell allegedly involved in the bombings.
“The operation covered several areas in Rural Damascus, including al-Husayniyah in the southern district and Ash al-Warwar, as part of efforts to pursue those involved and strengthen security and stability,” al-Dalati said.
The bombings struck central Damascus on July 7, including the area near the Ministry of Tourism and the Four Seasons Hotel, causing damage in the vicinity. Syrian authorities have since launched investigations and security operations to identify those responsible.
