Russia says military sites restructuring in Syria under discussion

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Russia praised on Wednesday the development of its relations with Syria, saying cooperation between the two countries continues to expand, while confirming discussions with Damascus on a possible restructuring of Russian military facilities in Latakia and Tartus.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said relations between Moscow and Damascus are developing across multiple sectors and that efforts are ongoing to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

“Russian-Syrian cooperation is developing very effectively, and work aimed at expanding multifaceted cooperation between our two countries continues,” Zakharova said.

She noted that government institutions and business sectors in both countries are involved in these efforts, adding that the Russian-Syrian Permanent Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific and Technical Cooperation continues to work actively to enhance bilateral relations.

Zakharova also confirmed that Russia and Syria are discussing issues related to Moscow’s military presence in the country.

“In our contacts with Syrian partners, we are also discussing our military presence in Syria and aspects of a possible restructuring of personnel at Russian military facilities in Syria,” she said.

She added that the issue falls within the authority of the Russian Ministry of Defense and noted that discussions regarding military presence and military cooperation are generally conducted behind closed doors.

Russia maintains military facilities in the coastal governorates of Latakia and Tartus, which have long served as key hubs for Moscow’s military operations and logistical activities in Syria.

The statements come as contacts between Moscow and Damascus continue on political, economic and military issues.
