Turkey says 660,000 Syrians returned since Late 2024

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Turkish government announced on Wednesday that more than 660,000 Syrians have returned from Turkey to Syria over the past 17 months, according to official figures released by the Interior Ministry.

In a statement, the ministry said that the total number of Syrians who have “voluntarily and safely” returned from Turkey since 2016 has reached 1,407,568.

According to updated data from Turkey’s Directorate of Migration Management, 2,280,542 Syrians remain under temporary protection inside the country.

The Interior Ministry added that data from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) indicates that 1,630,874 Syrians have returned to Syria across the region since December 8, 2024.

It noted that, based on the distribution of returnees by country, Turkey ranks first, with 639,995 Syrians returning from its territory.

The ministry stated that the figures were compiled through analysis of border crossing movements, population mobility reports, and multiple data sources. It added that comparing figures from different time periods as if they belong to the same timeframe is “misleading and inconsistent with reality.”
