QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The General Command of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) said on Thursday it held a meeting with Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra to discuss mechanisms for integrating the women’s force into the structure of the Syrian army.
According to a statement issued by the YPJ Media Center, the meeting came following an official request submitted by the YPJ General Command and focused on pathways to implement the January 29 agreement between the Syrian transitional government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
The YPJ delegation included commanders Rohlat Afrin and Sozdar Haji, Khalisa Ayed, commander of the Women’s Battalion in the Qamishli Brigade, and Roken Jamal, director of the YPJ Media Center.
Discussions addressed the legal and organizational aspects related to the integration process, alongside ongoing dialogue regarding the role of women within the new Syrian army.
The minister expressed what the YPJ described as “flexibility and willingness” to continue talks on practical frameworks that would enable women’s participation within the military institution.
The meeting follows a series of local and international engagements conducted by the YPJ General Command regarding the future of women’s participation in security and military institutions in Syria.
At the conclusion of the meeting, which coincided with the anniversary of the founding of the YPJ, the delegation requested the release of detained female and male comrades, according to the statement.
