CENTCOM, Syrian Interior Ministry destroy ISIS weapons sites in southern Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Sunday that its forces, in coordination with Syria’s Ministry of Interior, destroyed more than 15 ISIS weapons sites during a joint operation in southern Syria between Nov. 24–27.
CENTCOM said personnel from the Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) worked alongside Syrian security forces to identify and eliminate the storage facilities, which were spread across Rif Dimashq Governorate.
The operation included a series of airstrikes and controlled ground detonations, according to the CENTCOM statement.
The CENTCOM added that the destroyed weapons included more than 130 mortars and rockets, multiple assault rifles and machine guns, anti-tank mines, and materials used for manufacturing improvised explosive devices.
The forces also located and destroyed quantities of illicit drugs found at the sites, the statement read.
Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, said the joint operation aims to prevent ISIS from regrouping or conducting external attacks.
“This successful operation ensures gains made against ISIS are lasting and the group is not able to regenerate or export terrorist attacks to the U.S. homeland and around the world,” he said, adding that U.S. forces will “remain vigilant and continue to aggressively pursue ISIS remnants in Syria.”
The joint operation comes after the Syrian transitional government formally joined the U.S.-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS earlier this month, marking a significant shift in the country’s security landscape.
The move followed a meeting between Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where both sides emphasized cooperation against ISIS cells still active in central and southern Syria.
