U.S. Rep. calls for release of Syrian political prisoners in Lebanon
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Representative Joe Wilson urged on Wednesday evening the governments of Lebanon and Syria to establish a mechanism that would expedite the release of Syrian political prisoners held in Lebanon.
Via his official X Platform, Wilson said, “I have spoken with Syrian political prisoners inside Alroumieh prison in Lebanon who were jailed by Hezbollah simply for opposing the brutal Assad regime, which worked alongside Hezbollah.”
In September, Lebanon and Syria agreed to form two joint committees to address three key issues, determining the fate of roughly 2,000 Syrian prisoners in Lebanese custody, locating missing Lebanese citizens believed to be held in Syria, and resolving the undemarcated border areas between the two countries.
Wilson urged both governments to act swiftly. “I call on the government of Lebanon and government of Syria to work rapidly on a mechanism to quickly repatriate Syrian political prisoners back to Syria.”
