SDF to join new Syrian army under March 10 agreement – Mazloum Abdi
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, announced on Friday that the SDF will begin formal procedures to join a new Syrian army being established as part of the implementation of the March 10 Agreement.
In a statement addressed to the SDF’s Counter-Terrorism Units (YAT) on the 10th anniversary of the SDF’s founding, Abdi said that the victories achieved by the SDF “are the result of the support and unity of the Syrian people in all their components, and their backing of our national project to combat terrorism.”
He emphasized that a new national army is being formed in post-Baath Syria, and that the SDF, as a main force in defending the country and fighting terrorism, “will play a key role in building this new army and will be an integral and strong part of it.”
Abdi revealed that in the coming days, the SDF will send its delegation to the Syrian Ministry of Defense in Damascus to begin the integration process.
He added that the SDF’s decade-long experience in combating terrorism, its training, joint operations with international forces, and popular support “will provide the new Syrian army with additional strength and a renewed sense of national cohesion.”
The commander reaffirmed that the SDF’s fight against terrorism will continue “not only in northeast Syria but across the entire Syrian geography, at the national level, alongside other Syrian units.”
Abdi further highlighted the importance of the Counter-Terrorism Units (YAT), describing their experience as a cornerstone in the ongoing national struggle against ISIS and a key factor in achieving complete victory throughout Syria.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) were founded on Oct. 11, 2015 as a multi-ethnic coalition of Kurdish, Arab, Assyrian, and other local groups in northern and eastern Syria. Supported by the US-led Global Coalition, the SDF played a decisive role in defeating ISIS and establishing local governance structures under the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).
Over the past decade, the SDF has emerged as a central security actor in the region, balancing cooperation with international partners and calls for a decentralized political solution in Syria.
