U.S. strike in Syria kills senior al-Qaeda-linked attack planner – CENTCOM
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that its forces carried out a strike in Syria on Oct. 2, killing a senior member of an al-Qaeda-affiliated group.
CENTCOM said in a statement that the strike resulted in the killing of Muhammad Abd-al-Wahhab al-Ahmad, a member of Ansar al-Islam, an organization linked to al-Qaeda.
Adm. Brad Cooper, CENTCOM commander, stated that U.S. forces “remain postured to disrupt and defeat efforts by terrorists to plan, organize, and conduct attacks.”
He reaffirmed that the United States will “continue to defend our homeland, warfighters, allies and partners throughout the region and beyond.”
The statement did not specify the location of the strike in Syria. U.S. forces have frequently targeted senior figures linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS in northern and northwestern Syria, where remnants of extremist groups continue to operate.
