Aleppo Governor says calm restored after clashes in Kurdish neighborhoods
ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – Governor of Aleppo, Azzam al-Gharib, said on Tuesday that calm has largely returned to the governorate following the security tensions and clashes that erupted on Monday night in the Kurdish-majority neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh.
Al-Gharib told North Press that an important meeting is being held in Damascus to discuss the recent developments in Aleppo, northwestern Syria, and to determine the necessary measures to address the situation.
He explained that the public holiday announced earlier applies only to schools, universities, and government institutions, describing it as a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring citizens’ safety and facilitating movement in specific areas.
“The situation in the governorate is now more stable, and we are closely monitoring developments in coordination with the central authorities,” the governor said.
On Monday evening, the two Kurdish neighborhoods experienced clashes between the Kurdish Asayish forces and the security forces of the transitional government after the latter closed all entrances to the neighborhoods, preventing anyone from entering or leaving.
