SDF captures ISIS cell leader in Deir ez-Zor, one fighter killed
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Tuesday that their units captured a leader of an Islamic State (ISIS) sleeper cell during a military operation in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
According to an SDF statement, fighters from the Hajin Military Council clashed with the ISIS cell in the village of Daranj, east of Deir ez-Zor. The confrontation resulted in the injury and subsequent capture of the ISIS leader, described as a key figure in the group’s local operations.
The SDF confirmed that one of its fighters was killed and two others were wounded in the clashes.
In a separate incident, ISIS militants attempted to attack a security checkpoint in the nearby village of Burayha using motorcycles and machine guns.
SDF forces repelled the assault, injuring one attacker and forcing the rest to withdraw. No SDF casualties were reported in this attack.
Following the incidents, the SDF launched a wide-scale combing operation in the area to eliminate remaining threats and reinforce security.
The SDF reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing ISIS cells and protecting the population of Deir ez-Zor from extremist activities.
