Netanyahu says talks with Damascus continue

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that negotiations with Damascus are ongoing, stressing that any outcome will depend on securing Israel’s interests.

In a statement from his office, Netanyahu said those interests include disarmament in southwestern Syria and ensuring the safety of the Druze community in the country.

On Sep. 21, Netanyahu acknowledged “progress” in talks with Syria’s transitional government but cautioned that reaching a final agreement “remains far off.”

Meanwhile, Syria’s Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa used his address before the UN General Assembly to sharply criticize Israel, accusing it of continuing to threaten Syria since the fall of the former regime in December 2024.

“Israel’s policies contradict the international community’s support for Syria and its people, putting the region at risk and pushing it toward unpredictable conflicts,” al-Sharaa said.
