Erdogan pushes for SDF adherence to Syria’s March 10 Accord

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan met Wednesday with Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara at the Turkish House in New York during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the “necessity of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) adherence to the March 10 agreement with the Syrian government.”

The Turkish presidency said in a statement that the leaders discussed bilateral relations and regional issues. Erdoğan stressed that Turkey is closely monitoring developments in the region and announced that Turkish support for Syria would “continue to increase.”

Erdoğan also expressed his aspiration to see all sanctions imposed on Syria lifted at the earliest opportunity, describing Turkey’s stance as “positive toward any initiative that prioritizes protecting Syria’s territorial unity and sovereignty.”

According to the statement, Erdoğan specifically underscored the importance of SDF’s commitment to the March 10 agreement, a framework signed earlier this year aimed at easing tensions in northern Syria and enhancing coordination between Damascus and the Kurdish-led forces.

The March 10 agreement remains a critical point for stability in the northeast, where the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the SDF oversee security and governance under challenging conditions. Turkey’s repeated calls for compliance highlight Ankara’s continued concern over the developments in this region.

The meeting signals ongoing Turkish engagement in Syria’s political process and underscores Ankara’s stated aim of supporting initiatives that safeguard Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
