AANES holds 2nd festival for purebred Arabian horses in Syria’s Qamishli
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) held on Saturday the second purebred Arabian horse festival in Qamishli countryside in northeastern Syria.
Organized by the Arabian Horse Association, the festival took place in the village of Girke Khalo, in the east of Qamishli city, with the participation of 65 horsemen from across northeastern Syria.
Fayez Khalil, a member of the Arabian Horse Association in Hasakah, told North Press that the festival consisted of six rounds, all featuring riders from different areas of the region.
“Participation was not limited to our region alone but also included competitors from Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and other areas. The turnout was remarkable.”
Khalil highlighted that the second edition of the festival witnessed strong participation and attendance. He emphasized that equestrian culture is a heritage passed down through generations.
Faraj Mohammed, a horse breeder and participant, noted that hosting such events provides vital support for traditional practices in the region.
“We always participate in these festivals. Today is special because the Autonomous Administration inaugurated this racetrack for us. It was a meaningful opening for all horse breeders. We are celebrating with great joy.”
He said that despite the war and the difficult circumstances the region has endured, organizing festivals like this revives the spirit of equestrian sports, which remain a fundamental part of the cultural identity of the region.
The first festival was held in the village of Tel Ma’rouf, south of Qamishli, in 2023.
