Baghdad shares crucial intel with Damascus to prevent assassination
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Iraqi intelligence officials provided detailed information to Syrian authorities regarding a planned assassination of Syrian President Ahmad al-Shara, security sources reported Friday, leading to the foiling of the plot.
A senior Iraqi security source, speaking to Lebanon’s An-Nahar newspaper on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the intelligence became available as extremist groups were reportedly preparing attacks targeting minority communities across Syria, with the intent of sparking sectarian clashes.
The source added, “Close intelligence cooperation between Baghdad and Damascus led to the failure of both the assassination and the planned bombings.”
The report also noted that former fighters of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) had reportedly defected due to disagreements with al-Shara’s leadership following his assumption of the presidency after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
