SDF reports Damascus-linked assault in Deir ez-Zor
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said on Sunday that armed groups affiliated with the Syrian transitional government launched an attack on their positions in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
According to an SDF statement, the assault began at around 9:00 a.m. near al-Asharah Bridge in the town of Darnaj, along the Euphrates River.
The statement added that the attack coincided with Damascus-backed groups facilitating the river crossing of smuggling networks.
The SDF said its units “immediately took the necessary field measures” to repel the offensive, noting that clashes were still ongoing at the time of the statement.
The SDF accused the Syrian transitional government of bearing full responsibility for the assault, stressing that Damascus is providing cover to smuggling operations that threaten the security and stability of the region.
The SDF reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding areas under its control, saying it will continue to confront any attempts to destabilize Deir ez-Zor and northeastern Syria.
