Suspected ISIS gunmen kill worker in Deir ez-Zor countryside
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – A man was killed on Saturday by unknown gunmen, suspected to be ISIS sleeper cells, in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.
A local source from the town of al-Kabr, west of Deir ez-Zor, told North Press that armed men on a motorcycle opened fire with a machine gun at Ammar Yasser al-Rabah, 36, near the main road of the town.
The source added that al-Rabah died instantly, while the attackers fled toward the town’s desert area.
According to the source, al-Rabah was an employee at the Jazrat power station in western Deir ez-Zor and was targeted while returning home from work.
The incident reflects ongoing security challenges in Deir ez-Zor, where ISIS sleeper cells continue to launch sporadic attacks despite being territorially defeated by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) years ago.
In recent weeks, the Asayish (Internal Security Forces) and the SDF have intensified their security campaigns in Deir ez-Zor and surrounding areas, aiming to dismantle ISIS sleeper cells and prevent further attacks targeting civilians and local infrastructure.
