Iraqi PMF reports clashes at Syria border near al-Bukamal
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – A military source from Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) confirmed on Friday that clashes broke out near the Syria-Iraq border in the al-Bukamal area, located in eastern Deir ez-Zor Governorate.
Jaafar Mohammed al-Shghanbi, a commander of the PMF’s 7th Brigade stationed along the Syrian border, told North Press that “armed members opened fire from inside Syrian territory on Iraqi PMF forces positioned in the border area.”
Al-Shghanbi added that the reasons behind the provocation remain unclear, and no official statement has been issued by Iraq’s Ministry of Defense or the Joint Operations Command regarding the incident. He said the clashes began at dawn on Friday and lasted for approximately two hours.
According to al-Shghanbi, there were no casualties among PMF forces, who engaged with the unidentified armed elements during the confrontation.
The incident underscores ongoing security tensions along the Syria-Iraq border, where both countries’ forces frequently encounter armed groups.
