Israeli forces establish military checkpoint in Syria’s Quneitra
QUNEITRA, Syria (North Press) – Israeli army forces established on Sunday a military checkpoint east of the town of Jbata al-Khashab in the Quneitra countryside, southern Syria.
Local sources told North Press that the checkpoint consisted of military jeeps and about 25 soldiers who were deployed in the area.
The forces set up the checkpoint along the main road linking Jbata al-Khashab with the town of Ofaniya, where they began stopping and searching civilian vehicles. Soldiers also inspected IDs of passersby and residents moving along the route.
The sources added that the checkpoint remains in place at the time of reporting, though it is unclear whether the deployment will be permanent or temporary, as similar Israeli patrols and incursions have occurred in recent months.
On Saturday, Israeli troops reportedly entered the village of al-A’sha in the same countryside and carried out searches of several sites and homes.
The Israeli army frequently conducts patrols and limited incursions along the Syrian side of the Golan Heights, citing security concerns over the presence of Iranian-backed groups and Hezbollah near its border.
Since the 1974 disengagement agreement, the area has remained tense, with sporadic military activity and mutual accusations between Israel and the Syrian government over violations of the ceasefire line.
Recent months have seen a noticeable increase in Israeli reconnaissance operations and temporary checkpoints inside Syrian territory.
