Israel to maintain military presence on Mount Hermon, buffer zone in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that the army would maintain its presence on Mount Hermon and in the buffer zone in Syria to safeguard the residents of the Golan and Galilee.
Katz emphasized that the deployment in Mount Hermon is intended to defend the communities of the Golan and Galilee from threats originating on the Syrian side, describing it as a key lesson drawn from the events of Oct. 7.
He added “We will continue to protect the Druze in Syria as well.”
A day earlier, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani accused Israel of violating the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and relevant UN Security Council resolutions by establishing intelligence centers and military outposts in restricted areas.
The Syrian Foreign Ministry further called on the United Nations and the Security Council to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities and take urgent, effective measures to halt what it described as Israel’s “violations and aggressions” on Syrian territory.
