SDF repels pro-government attack in Deir ez-Zor countryside

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Sunday that its fighters repelled an attack by armed groups affiliated with the Syrian government on one of its military points in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, resulting in injuries among both sides.

In a statement published on its official page, the SDF said, “Armed groups affiliated with the Damascus government targeted a military point belonging to the Kessra Military Council in the town of al-Jneineh, west of Deir ez-Zor, using a BKC machine gun and a drone.”

The statement described the assault as a “desperate attempt” to spread chaos and destabilize security in the area, coinciding with an escalation of attacks by the Islamic State (ISIS).

According to the SDF, its fighters responded immediately, repelling the assault and striking the sources of fire. The counterattack led to confirmed injuries among the assailants, while five SDF members sustained varying degrees of wounds.

The SDF held the Syrian government directly responsible for the actions of the armed groups involved, urging Damascus to stop what it referred to as “violations” against its forces.

The Deir ez-Zor countryside has witnessed sporadic security incidents, with tensions persisting between government-aligned groups and SDF positions, alongside ongoing operations against ISIS remnants in the region.

The SDF, supported by the Global Coalition, reaffirmed its commitment to continue securing the region against ISIS threats and any other hostile activities that endanger stability in northeast Syria.
