Syrian authorities: Farouq Abu Bakr assassin confesses

AZAZ, Syria (North Press) – Syrian authorities announced on Monday that the suspect involved in the assassination of Farouq Abu Bakr, a commander within the Turkey-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), has voluntarily surrendered. The killing occurred on Sunday in the northern Aleppo city of Azaz, where Abu Bakr was shot by unidentified assailants.

The Syrian Ministry of Interior, through spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba, said, “Thanks to God, and after significant efforts by the internal security leadership in Aleppo to identify the perpetrators of Farouq Abu Bakr’s assassination, the assailant has turned himself in and confessed to the crime.”

According to initial investigations, the killing appears to be motivated by personal revenge rather than organized political or militant activity.

Separately, al-Baba provided details on a recent explosion in Aleppo’s al-Maysar neighborhood, clarifying that the perpetrator was a known drug user with a criminal record. The individual detonated an explosive device on himself following disputes with his former spouse’s family. “This incident was not carried out using a suicide vest,” al-Baba said.

The SNA has been active in northern Aleppo as part of Turkish-backed operations, while the region’s security remains closely monitored by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) and the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), who continue counterterrorism and local security operations to prevent wider destabilization.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect is in custody and further investigations are ongoing to verify all circumstances surrounding Abu Bakr’s killing.
