SDF threatens response as Damascus forces escalate provocations
Hasakah, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) issued on Monday a warning regarding what it described as repeated provocations by forces loyal to the Damascus government near several areas under its control. The SDF stated that if these provocations persist, it will respond in self-defense.
In an official statement published on its website, the SDF accused pro-Damascus groups of suspicious movements in recent days, especially around the town of Deir Hafer and its surrounding villages. The statement emphasized that the SDF has so far exercised restraint but affirmed that continued provocations would compel a defensive reaction.
The statement also highlighted increased activity near the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo city, where pro-Damascus forces have reportedly escalated patrols and deployed drone flights over the areas. The SDF noted one drone exploded on the outskirts of Sheikh Maqsoud, labeling these actions as clear provocations.
The SDF described these actions as violations of the ceasefire agreement signed between the local councils of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh and the Syrian government on April 1, 2025. It called on Damascus authorities to restrain their forces to prevent the collapse of the existing understandings and to maintain civil peace in Aleppo and other regions.
On Sunday, the Syrian Ministry of Defense denied reports circulated by several media outlets and social media platforms suggesting military movements toward SDF-controlled areas.
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) continues to emphasize the importance of preserving stability and upholding agreements that ensure security across the region. The SDF, backed by international support, remains a key security actor safeguarding northeastern Syria from renewed conflict and instability.
No immediate military engagement was reported following Monday’s statement. Local sources indicate ongoing monitoring of the situation by the SDF and diplomatic channels to avoid escalation.
