SDF reports death of two fighters in ISIS assault
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on Wednesday the death of two of its fighters in an attack carried out by Islamic State (ISIS) cells in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
In a statement, the SDF said the assault took place in the town of al-Bahra, part of the Hajin area, at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time. According to the statement, two armed ISIS members on a motorcycle opened fire with a machine gun on an SDF military vehicle, killing two fighters instantly.
The SDF noted that the attack was part of ongoing attempts by ISIS to destabilize the security and stability of areas liberated from the group’s control. Eastern Deir ez-Zor has witnessed sporadic attacks in recent months, as sleeper cells continue to operate in remote villages and desert areas despite intensified security operations.
The statement added that the SDF will continue to pursue ISIS cells “to ensure security in northern and eastern Syria,” and emphasized ongoing coordination with local security institutions and the international community to confront what it described as a growing threat.
At the conclusion of its statement, the SDF expressed condolences to the families of the two fighters, affirming its commitment to defending the region against future attacks.
No group other than ISIS has claimed responsibility for the assault.
