Kurdish official urges Syrian government to end arbitrary arrests in Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – A Kurdish official on Monday called on the Syrian Transitional Government to immediately halt the arbitrary arrests targeting Kurdish youth in Aleppo Governorate, northwestern Syria. She expressed deep concern over the fate of the detainees and described the arrests as unjust and alarming.

“In recent weeks, arbitrary detentions have significantly increased on the roads between Deir Hafer, Tel Aran, and Tel Hasel, targeting civilians simply trying to earn a living,” Arin Hannan, Co-Deputy Chair of the Kurdish Neighborhood Council in Aleppo, told North Press.

She recalled that an agreement was previously established between the local Kurdish Neighborhood Council and the Syrian government, guaranteeing freedom of movement for all Syrians across governorates.

Hannan held the Damascus-based government responsible for violating the terms of that agreement, warning that such breaches contribute to growing insecurity and fear.

“Residents now live in a state of fear and anxiety when traveling between the northern and eastern countryside of Aleppo,” she added.

She urged the government to take full responsibility for the recent arrests, to disclose the fate and whereabouts of the detainees, and to secure their immediate release.

According to local sources, armed factions claiming to have joined the Syrian Ministry of Defense detained approximately 30 individuals earlier in July. The arrests occurred along the roads connecting the towns of Deir Hafer, Tel Aran, and Tel Hasel, as the individuals were commuting to their workplaces.
