Over half a million Syrian refugees return home amid challenges – UNHCR

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced on Thursday that more than half a million Syrian refugees have returned to their home country since the fall of the former regime.

Additionally, over 1.2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) have returned to their original communities within Syria during the same period, according to the UNHCR.

Despite these returns, the UNHCR emphasized that returnees are encountering significant challenges, including limited access to basic services such as healthcare, education, and housing.

These conditions continue to hinder sustainable reintegration and long-term resettlement for many Syrians.

The UNHCR underscored the need for increased international support to improve local infrastructure and ensure dignified conditions for those returning.
