Al-Sharaa discusses with U.S. Envoy sanctions relief, SDF agreement
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian Presidential Office announced on Saturday evening that Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa met with U.S. Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, in Istanbul to discuss a range of critical issues, including the implementation of a comprehensive agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
In a statement, the Presidency said the meeting addressed the ongoing efforts to lift U.S. sanctions, describing them as a significant burden on the Syrian people and a major obstacle to economic recovery.
According to the statement, the U.S. envoy confirmed that Washington has initiated the process of easing sanctions in line with the U.S. President’s directive and that this process is ongoing until a full and comprehensive removal is achieved.
The two sides also discussed strategies to promote foreign investment in Syria, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
Al-Sharaa expressed his government’s readiness to offer the necessary support and incentives to attract investors and contribute to national reconstruction within a secure and stable environment.
The statement noted that both parties agreed on the importance of eliminating chemical weapons in coordination with the international community and in accordance with existing international agreements.
Additionally, the meeting explored avenues for joint security cooperation to address regional challenges—such as combating terrorism, strengthening border control, and fostering stability.
The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to implementing a comprehensive agreement with the SDF that ensures Syrian sovereignty over all national territory. They also discussed mechanisms for integrating SDF forces into state institutions.
The U.S. envoy further revealed that Damascus had agreed to assist in locating missing American citizens or their remains and facilitating their return.
