Druze religious authority condemns armed attack in southern Damascus
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Druze Spiritual Authority in the city of Jaramana, south of Damascus, issued on Tuesday a statement strongly condemning both the alleged insult to the Prophet Muhammad and the recent armed attack on the city.
In its statement, the authority denounced “any offense directed at the Prophet Muhammad,” describing the circulated audio recording—alleged to contain offensive remarks and confirmed by the Ministry of Interior to be fabricated—as “a deliberate attempt to incite strife and sow division among citizens of the same nation.”
The statement also condemned what it described as an “unjustified armed assault” on Jaramana’s Druze-majority city, which involved the use of various types of weapons and targeted innocent civilians, spreading fear among the city’s peaceful residents.
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, left five people dead and at least 12 others injured, all of the were of the Druze community.
According to the Druze authority, most of those killed or injured were members of the General Security Directorate, “who were at their posts when they were ambushed by treacherous and hostile forces.”
The statement stressed that “the protection of citizens’ lives, dignity, and property is among the most basic responsibilities of the state and its security institutions,” calling for immediate action to end the violence and prevent its recurrence.
It also urged official bodies to address the public transparently, clarify the circumstances of the incident, and put an end to inflammatory and accusatory rhetoric that is further escalating tensions.
The statement concluded by holding state authorities fully responsible for the attack and any subsequent deterioration of the situation.
