Asayish concludes anti-ISIS operation in Hawl Camp, arresting 20 suspects
HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – The Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) announced on Wednesday the conclusion of their latest security operation targeting the Islamic State (ISIS) cells in the Hawl Camp, located in the southern countryside of Hasakah, northeastern Syria.
In a statement marking the end of the campaign, the Asayish confirmed the arrest of 20 ISIS members and collaborators. Security forces also seized three Kalashnikov rifles, a pistol, several magazines and rounds of ammunition, along with other military equipment hidden inside one of the tents.
The campaign included thorough sweep-and-search missions and targeted raids across multiple sectors of the camp, in addition to special operations conducted outside its perimeter.
The forces also foiled a coordinated mass escape attempt organized by an ISIS cell operating inside the camp in collaboration with an external network. All members involved in the attempt were detained.
The Asayish reported that they, along with the Women’s Asayish, dismantled a “high-risk ISIS cell” that had been planning coordinated terrorist attacks in collaboration with other sleeper cells.
In its concluding statement, the General Command of the Asayish called on the international community to assume its legal and humanitarian responsibilities regarding the Hawl Camp.
The statement urged countries to repatriate their nationals detained in the camp and to provide essential support to the AANES to help manage this complex security and humanitarian challenge more effectively and safely.
The campaign, which began on April 18, was conducted jointly by the Asayish and the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), operating under the umbrella of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with support from the U.S.-led Global Coalition.
On Tuesday, the SDF revealed to North Press that 20 suspected ISIS affiliates were apprehended during the operation inside the camp.
