Syrian Druze leader meets UN envoy to discuss security future

SUWAYDA, Syria (North Press) – Sheikh Laith al-Balous, leader of “Men of Dignity” movement in southern Syria, confirmed on Saturday that he met with U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen last week in Damascus and discussed unresolved and complex issues surrounding the Syrian crisis.

Speaking to North Press, al-Balous said that they received a formal invitation from Pedersen’s office to attend the meeting, which addressed several critical political, economic, security, and public service matters.

During the meeting, Pedersen reportedly provided reassurances about the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting a political solution that reflects the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Al-Balous emphasized the importance of addressing the security situation in Suwayda Governorate, noting that an understanding was reached with the Ministry of Defense to ensure that military and security personnel deployed in the governorate will be drawn from the local population. He added that work on this initiative has already begun.

“This meeting will not be the last,” al-Balous stated. “We expect future rounds of dialogue based on a comprehensive political, security, and economic review covering all Syrian territories.”

The meeting, held on April 9, marked a notable engagement between Druze community leaders and international mediators aiming to advance stability and reform in post-conflict Syria.
