Assailants bomb former Assad-era military official’s home in Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – Unidentified assailants detonated on Friday night an explosive device inside the home of a former Assad-era military intelligence official in Daraa Governorate in southern Syria, causing extensive damage to the property.
According to local news outlet Daraa 24, the house – located in Sheikh Maskin town in the north of Daraa – was rigged with landmines before the explosion.
The targeted property belonged to Imad Abdel Ghani al-Nawateer, also known by his nickname “Abu Nizar.”
Al-Nawateer was a prominent figure in the military intelligence apparatus during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, and, along with his sons, led pro-government militias affiliated with military intelligence in the Daraa Governorate.
Reports indicate that several members of his family held officer positions in regime-affiliated security agencies and are accused of committing human rights violations during the conflict.
The house was unoccupied at the time of the explosion. Al-Nawateer and his family reportedly fled the area to an undisclosed location following the fall of the regime’s control in the region.
