Germany’s envoy to Syria welcomes SDF-Syrian government agreement
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Germany’s special envoy to Syria, Stefan Schneck, welcomed on Tuesday the agreement between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian state, calling it a historic opportunity for lasting peace in Syria and the broader region.
In a statement to North Press, Schneck emphasized that the agreement “requires political courage and decisiveness, but also a great deal of willingness to compromise and trust between the partners.”
He expressed optimism, saying, “If this can continue to be achieved in the future, then I have great hopes for a better future for Syria.”
Drawing a parallel to the European Union, Schneck highlighted the importance of compromise and trust, stating, “The need for willingness to compromise and trust is only too well known to us in the EU.”
He also referenced the EU’s motto, “Unity in Diversity,” stressing that Syria must find a way to preserve both its political unity and cultural diversity. He concluded by expressing hope that this bold step will pave the way for success.
“Syria too must manage to preserve its political unity and cultural diversity at the same time. But after this courageous step, I am hopeful that this will succeed.”
