Syria’s FM attends OPCW executive council meeting

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Foreign Minister in the caretaker government, Asaad al-Shaibani, announced on Wednesday his participation in a meeting of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague.

In a post on X Platform (formerly Twitter), al-Shaibani stated, “Today, for the first time in Syria’s history, I am attending the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague.”

He emphasized that the meeting reflects Syria’s commitment to international security and serves as a tribute to those who lost their lives suffocating at the hands of Assad’s regime.

“This participation reaffirms Syria’s commitment to international security—and honours those who lost their lives suffocating at the hands of the Assad regime,” he added.

According to international reports, in 2013, the toppled regime launched missiles carrying sarin gas—a highly toxic nerve agent—on the Ghouta region near Damascus, killing over 1,400 people, including hundreds of children.
