Kazakhstan says 40 citizens remain in armed groups, camps in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Moscow, Dauren Abaev, announced on Sunday that there are 40 Kazakhs in Syria, stating that some are active in armed groups while others are in camps in northeastern Syria.
Abayev pointed out that more than 30 Kazakh citizens present in Syria are still within armed groups, while 10 others are detained in camps under the control of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
He added that most of these citizens do not plan to return to Kazakhstan, according to the Russian news agency “Novosti.”
The Kazakh ambassador to Moscow indicated that there is no cause for concern regarding the return of fighters from Syria, noting that this operation is under special surveillance by Kazakh security agencies.
He explained that between 2019 and 2021, Kazakhstan repatriated 607 citizens, including women and children, and that 74 Kazakh women returned home independently, pointing out that 53 individuals were prosecuted on charges related to participating in terrorist activities or advocating for terrorism.
