DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – One person was killed and several others were injured on Saturday in armed clashes between General Security forces and local armed groups in the town of Jaramana, east of Damascus, local sources reported.
The clashes erupted following the killing of a security officer and the kidnapping of another by unidentified armed groups. The situation escalated as security forces launched a crackdown in the area, leading to intermittent gunfire exchanges.
According to residents, Jaramana witnessed heavy security deployments throughout the day as the General Security forces attempted to regain control of the situation. The fighting resulted in one confirmed fatality, while multiple individuals sustained injuries.
Local sources stated that tensions had been simmering for weeks due to increased criminal activities and power struggles between security forces and armed factions operating in the area.
“Security forces are on high alert, and movement in certain parts of the city has been restricted,” an eyewitness told North Press.
Jaramana, a town with a significant Druze and Christian population, has been relatively stable compared to other areas in Damascus countryside. However, recent months have seen a surge in armed confrontations, fueled by growing instability and the proliferation of weapons among local groups.
By Saturday evening, sources reported a fragile calm in Jaramana, but the security situation remains volatile. Checkpoints have been set up at key entry points to prevent further escalation, and authorities are investigating the identities of those involved in the attack.
While no group has officially claimed responsibility for the initial attack on security personnel, speculation persists regarding the involvement of local militias or criminal gangs.
As security forces continue their operations, residents of Jaramana remain on edge, wary of further unrest in the coming days.
