UN urges Syrian parties to pursue compromise as envoy arrives in Damascus
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – A United Nations official said on Wednesday that they are closely following developments regarding northeast Syria and the continuing efforts to reach a way forward through negotiation.
In an exclusive statement to North Press, Jenifer Fenton, spokeswoman for U.N. Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, added that they give their strong encouragement to the Syrian parties concerned, and all relevant stakeholders, to work on genuine compromises.
“We give our strong encouragement to the Syrian parties concerned, and all relevant stakeholders, to work on genuine compromises, which are essential for peace and stability and for an inclusive transition in Syria,” she noted.
Fenton indicated that they took note of the formation of a national dialogue preparatory committee and that consultations in governorates are underway, adding, “we are following it closely.”
She stressed on “A transparent, credible and inclusive process of consultation, with the participation of all segments of society, is essential to inspire public trust and confidence in the political transition process.”
Jenifer Fenton pointed out that U.N. envoy Geir Pedersen arrived in Syria on Tuesday and will be engaging there on all aspects of the Syrian-led transition.
